Bobbie and I have been walking laps in West Ed mall for some time now, just waiting for the weather to smarten up so we can take our adventures outside for some better scenery. So we planned a 10km walk for this past Sunday, March 18.
Bobbie before our adventure:

2. Bobbie all smiles!

3. Me being silly

4. Me all smiles!

Notice all the snow on the ground still... we were worried the paths along the river would be icy still, but they were pretty good. The scenery was awesome along the way, and although it was still pretty chilly (-7 I think, maybe colder) we kept up a good enough pace to keep warm.

3. Spring is coming! The river is beginning to thaw!

4. More of the mostly still frozen river

I'm really proud of Bobbie and I for forging on in our walk. It took us about 2 hours and 40 minutes total and we walked a total of 10.93kms (almost 7 miles or 1,220 steps). On the way back was harder because the wind picked up and was blowing in our faces. Hardest most on my poor lungs, breathing in really cold air aggrivated my asthma. But, I felt good for completing our goal. Next month we're going to pick another Sunday and walk 15kms.

Our "After The 10km Walk" pictures:

2. Me, all flushed and hair dishevelled (from the coooold wind!)

We have just gotten back from our walk and we did 10.93 km. It feels pretty good. Some of the hills were tough but we got up all of them. Even the last one.(that was the hard one) Our goal is to get up the hill without stopping. We will do it. I will post more later

I am having such a great day. We were suppose to walk last night but I had a headache. Today I feel like I am on cloud nine and ten. I am happy to be walking tonight. i am starting to get excited for our 10 km walk on Sunday. I hope the weather continues to behave. I wonder if we could convince the mall to play their music louder tonight. i am in the mood for loud music. As long as they are playing good songs.

I have to remember extra shoes tonight. i am hoping we can take our photos tonight and put them on line for our walking journal. I would like to see the progress we are making.

Last week while I was trying on clothes at work, I found that I have lost a pant size. Woohoo for me!! If I can find me a scale that works, I'll know just how much I've lost :)

I feel so tired lately. Last night we only walked one lap and it felt like 20. We are planing to do an outside walk of 10km on March 18, 2007. That will be the big one. I think we are ready. We will need a day to recoup I am sure but I think if we put our minds and feet to it we can do it.

I am hoping to meet Crystal soon. She is the other girl who will walking with us. I think when the three of us can start training together it will be easier because we will have each other to draw energy from.

So tonight I rest and spend some time with my son. I have missed him. This working and walking thing has really taken over my life. It's a good thing it will keep me out of trouble for a while.

The 2 laps always kick my ass. Well, my legs, actually (quite literally!!). My thighs and calves are tight today, not sore though. So I guess that's a good sign.

I agree with Bobbie's post... our endurance pace (the one we walked at last night) was good. Speed walking is good too; gotta jump start the heart every now and then!

Our registration is due soon. Getting excited!!

PS- Oh what I wouldn't give to look like my icon!!

Well we did it. we walked two laps and have lived to tell about it, again. When we got to the mall someone had ripped the yellow pages all over the floor so Andrea and I cleaned it up before our walk. It was a good walk. I think if we ca n keep the pace we had tonight the walking would be easier. We took a slower pace but still got the heart rate up. I think if we do two laps we need a steady pace and if we do one lap we do a quick pace. I feel better for walking.

I keep telling myself good things about me while i walk and i think it makes it easier for me. Some of the things I tell myself are:

I am the perfect weight.
I have the perfect body.
I am healthy.
I am beautiful.

I think it is important that I keep telling these things to myself and sometimes out loud in the mall while looking into the glass so I can heal myself and my soul. I think we all need to do this.

So lately I have felt like there is too much happening in my life and like I don't have the energy to get it all done. After a little thought I realized I need to clean my head out and the only way to do that is to clean my house out. That is what I am spending the day doing. Funny thing is I am looking forward to doing it. I am walking tonight. I would like to do a couple of laps. I need to get my thoughts clear and walking does seem to help with that as well.

Well I thought it was time to do a little post and say I am alive and almost kicking. I am having a hard time getting my head into walking. I feel so tired all the time. I know once i start walking i will feel better. I am hoping we can post some photos on here soon so you can all track our progress. Tomorrow I walk no matter how many excuses I give myself...

I'm having a hard time keeping up this pace. Work both jobs in one day, walk with Bobbie. I need some kind of natural stimulant... something to give me an energy boost. Cuz days that I work both jobs and we train, I'm on the go from 7am till midnight or 1am. That doesn't leave any time to just relax or get myself and my surroundings (ie: my apartment) organized. Take today for example: I forgot it's the 1st of the month and I left for work this morning without dropping of my rent cheque to my building manager's apartment. I work at my day job, Fero, till 5pm, and then on to my evening job at Addition-Elle, where my shift starts at 5:30pm. 30 minutes is barely enough time to get from Fero to A-E in rush hour traffic, let alone trying to go from the west end of the city, to downtown (where I live) in the same rush hour traffic, then back to the west end again. So, I forfeitted my lunch break to drop my rent off.

Thankfully, I only do all three of these obligation (at the most) 3 times a week.

Well last night I bit the big one! I think the 2 laps are going to take some getting used to... I need to slow down and not speed walk. It's not a race!! My calves, ass, thighs, feet and even my arms hurt. How the hell is it that my arms hurt??

I wasn't able to drink 5.6 Evian bottles yesterday. I drank 4, which is still way more water than I'm used to drinking, 3 litres. I may have to work up to this slowly.

I need to find something to eat at night after walking. I was completely ravenous, and I gave into McDonalds... bad me. I was thinking a banana and some cheese or an apple and some cheese, something like that. Something that's just enough to calm the lion so I don't go to bed starving. Any suggestions?

Post by Andrea

Bobbie and I have started our training. Last week in fact. But last night we started with 2 laps of West Edmonton Mall. 1 lap, including all the alcoves, is aprox. 3.5 kms. So last night, after having worked at Fero and Adittion-Elle, we walked 2 laps. That's almost 7 kms, and nearly 8,500 steps. So finally I have made "the goal" of walking 10,000 steps in a day!! And although I was tired, I felt damn good! And even more surprising, I am not sore today. I find it to be quite amazing that my body has taken to this so well, seeing as up until recently I've lead a predominantly sedimentary lifestyle.

Aside from doing this for a great cause (The Breast Cancer Foundation, for those who are not familiar with the reason for starting this community in the first place), I'm doing this in memory of my sister, Mandy (even though she didn't have breast cancer, she was still afflicted with a cancer that ultimately took her life), and for myself. I want to lose this weight I've managed to keep on for so long (far, FAR too long, in fact!!) and get in shape. I want to feel healthy and beautiful again.

A big part of all this is water intake. This next part is a bit boring, so go ahead and read something else if you like. Anyhoo, about a month ago, a lady came into Addition-Elle and was talking to one of the girls about detox. I got intrigued, so she talked to me too. Apparently, drinking your 8 glasses of water a day isn't good enough if you're over weight and trying to shed excess pounds. Drinking water helps, but it needs to be a certain amount in order to be effective.
So here's what you do:
1. Weigh yourself in pounds (lbs)
2. Divide that number in half
3. BINGO! That's the magic number... that's how many ounces of water you should drink in a day.
Andrea (hey, that's me!!) should be drinking 145 ounces of water a day. That's 18 cups or 4,259 millilitres or 5.6 of my Evian sport water bottles (it's 750 mls). HOLY HELL... can I actually drink that much water without floating away??? Right now it's 10:30am and I've drank 1 and 1/3 of my Evian bottles of water. I still have almost 4.5 Evian bottles to go.
Andrea suddenly hears the faint chanting of 'Chug, chug, chug, chug!!' off in the distance....
